Live: Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks

Caught Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks last night in NYC. It was a solid show that was heavy on material from their latest release, Mirror Traffic, of which I was particularly into “Forever 28,” “Tune Grief,” and “Spazz.” The few oldies that they played — “Animal Midnight” and “1% f 1″ — were highlights as well, though one of my favorites was an off-the-cuff cover of Sweet’s “Love Is Like Oxygen”… SM is still SM — the coolest lead singer in music.

After the show I picked up Mirror Traffic, as well as the most recent album by the opening band, Holy Sons. I’m a sucker for noisy, experimental stuff but I thought they were really impressive. They remind me of a darker/more experimental My Morning Jacket without the gratuitous reverb.

Anyway, no recordings of the show out there yet, so here’s a track from each of the albums I picked up.
