I found myself in Chicago this past weekend to catch the football game and reacquaint myself several friends old and new, not least of all Matthew’s preferred huckster of used audio, Reckless Records. Not unexpectedly, my stack of been-looking-for-it’s grew quickly, highlighted by discs from The Pastels, The Wonder Stuff, and this superbly bluesy side project of the Grifters called Those Bastard Souls (we’ll talk later, Matt). Still, my best purchase had to be Hey Man!, the 1991 release by bedroom-popper extraordinaire, Richard X. Heyman. Like Material Issue, another early-nineties, power pop fave of mine, Hey Man! hit the scene literally months before Nevermind—just in time to receive the bare minimum of label support despite an irresistible blend of upbeat hooks, surging melodies, and some of the most air-drum-inducing fills you’ll ever hear in a three-minute song. I mean, seriously, isn’t that precisely what we’re all looking for out of music? Anyhoo, here’s track number second, “Back to You”—heartfelt sentiment meet immediate catch. Repeat buttons beware….
This I like. I miss Reckless.
