El-P: “Works Every Time”

I know Hip Hop isn’t the preferred genre for most of our readership, but El-P’s new release, C4C, is out and it’s easily the best album (of any genre) that I’ve heard thus far in 2012. It’s a distopic landscape of sick beats, hooks, and clever, sci-fi themed lyrics (SCIENCE!). The guy is simply the best producer around right now, and this album proves he’s just as good of a songwriter. It just makes me want to get in my car, crank up the volume, and be that guy.

Recommended, highly.

  1. Yeah, I don’t know what it is, but this feels like the sort of crossover, Indie hip-hop that will actually convince a lot of people to give the genre a try. Kind of like how Vampire Weekend made it cool to like to AfroBeat for about a week and half. And it’s not that C4C is particularly accessible—I mean nearly every track is abrasive and dense and pissed off, and half the time the samples sound like something made for a Mortal Kombat movie (probably the one Bridgett Wilson bailed on and was re-cast with a less hot version of herself). El-P has sounded a bit like this before, particularly on “Poisenville Kids” off ISWYD—proof positive, FYI, that Chan Marshall is the frickin’ Everest of Indie Chicks. But never this consistently or taken to this level. Pump this shit like they do in the future, indeed…

  2. Agreed, I think this might be one of those rare albums that has a lot of crossover potential –similar to Madvillain’s Madvillainy. I just can’t get over how well produced the whole thing is. It would have been a great soundtrack for Escape From LA.

My fav line from this song: “if i exist right now, i damn sure can’t provide you proof… definitions of existence in this state are loose…”
