Here’s “Start the Commotion” by The Wiseguys, a track released in 1999, but that didn’t really enter the public consciousness (and the radio waves) until two years later when Mitsubishi famously utilized the tune in an ad for their just-revamped Eclipse. After that, the song became, as Pete Venkman would say, a legitimate phenomenon, breaking the Billboard Top 40 and eventually garnering frequent spins from Alt-Rock DJs across the country. Catchy, frenetic, dancey—this song should have catalyzed my current obsession with hip-hip / electronica. Unfortunately, it did not. Instead, I slogged through an extended period wherein I thought Zwan was a halfway decent band. Oh, lost time….
