SOTW: “Steps and Numbers”

Over the past two weeks I’ve been slogging it out up in studio to get things ready for my final review, which means long hours, late nights, coffee, and endless music playlists (seriously, I listened to the entire Pixies catalog twice in one night). Though I haven’t really listened to this album in a few years, I found The Appleseed Cast’s Low Level Owl series to be an extremely nurturing listen during the late hours. As Scott can confirm, I’m very much an album-oriented guy when it comes to listening to music, so while I don’t think any of the individual songs on LLO v1 or v2 are all that incredible, I think the series as a whole is really great. It reminds me quite a bit of Olivia Tremor Control’s Dusk At Cubist Castle. Not in terms of sound but in how they move back and forth between pop, weird experimental pieces, and strung out instrumentals throughout the album and within single songs. Here’s one such pop track that ends with a great repetitive instrumental piece that’s perfect when your mind has become straight mush.
