This week’s Thursday Throwback goes to one of the first ladies of nineties alt-rock, Tonya Donelly. With a CV that includes being a longtime member of critically adored ’80s college rockers Throwing Muses and co-founder with Kim Deal of the (again, critically—not to mention Matt-ally—adored) Breeders, Donelly had plenty of cred to her name when she formed Belly. Propelled by Alt’s Nirvana-fueled explosion a few years previous, the band’s 1993 debut, Star, immediately received heavy play on both radio and MTV, eventually garnering Donelly and cohort a spot on the cover of Rolling Stone and a number one Modern Rock hit in lead single, “Feed the Tree.” A poppy amalgam of catchy guitars and artfully enigmatic lyrics, the song (along with several by the aforementioned Breeders) stands as one of the great female-led tracks of the pre-Lilith era, and helped pave the way for subsequent blowups by the likes of Morissette, McLachlan, Apple, Loeb, Brooks, Bonham, etc. And I don’t even want to think about a world w/o those guys….
