Shoegazing: “Aruca”

“If My Bloody Valentine’s sound is like chainsaws under water, then Medicine is like chainsaws cutting through steel.” Can’t remember where I read that quote but it’s incredibly apt. Brad Laner and company crafted some of the noisiest, most ear-piercing sounds of the early 90’s, yet they also managed to work in enough melody to make them one of my favorite first(-ish)-wave Shoegazers. With the borderline drone-y sound they had going, I like to think of them as the early-90’s, electric version of Animal Collective. Anyway, here’s one of my favorites off their debut, Shot Forth Self Living. Gotta love the 4-track tape work.

Also, if you’re thinking to yourself “wow this band sounds awesome but I feel like I’ve heard something like this before in my second favorite Ernie Hudson film*”, you’d be right. Medicine is the band playing in the background of a scene in 1994’s The Crow. BTW, according to IMDB, The Crow is getting a remake sometime this year. Guess the screenwriter… that’s right, Nick Cave…

* The first of course being Ghostbusters.

  1. Very cool. A bit reminiscent of Blonde Redhead, particularly w/ the siren-ish cooing they have going on. Regarding Hudson, he had an absolutely spectacular turn as Van Buren’s boyfriend on L&O. So versatile!
