Let me preface today’s TT by saying work was an absolute shit storm—so much so that I felt the need to head over to my preferred watering hole come quitting time and immediately pound a couple Hop Slams so as to regain some degree of sanity. Through the ensuing buzz, my mind turned to weirdly masochistic thoughts. Work caused me pain, but recompensed with life-giving Hop Slam…the Hop Slam provided solace, but inevitably wrought upset heads and aching of stomachs—such was the cud of my rumination. Thank god my musings turned eventually, as they so often do, to the harborage of early nineties radio rock, specifically 1993’s favorite one-hit wonders, Possum Dixon (you’re right, that distinction probably belongs to Green Jelly). With its droll post-collegiate angst and off the cuff hooks, the band’s top ten Modern Rock hit, “Watch the Girl Destroy Me,” provided mix-tape fodder par excellence and the perfect gateway to the brand of overly clever slacker-rock (© Stephen Malkmus) that soon came to dominate my worldview. Also, the song gives this post some semblance of thematic resolution. Side note, the rest of PD’s self-titled (on which WtGDM appears) features some other quality shtuff—definitely a bargain bin steal should you come upon it.
