Thursday Throwback: Deadeye Dick mix

Wooo! It really does feel like a throwback Thursday with the Wolverines finally getting the monkey off their back by taking down hated rivals the Spartans. We’re obviously still a long ways from nineties’ levels of competitiveness, but this is an undeniably huge win, particularly given the golden opportunity to string a few Ws together with the Hawkeyes visiting Ann Arbor this coming Sunday (I’ll be there, bitches!). Anyhoo, the masses spoke yesterday, and I heard them loud and clear—here’s the first three singles off Deadeye Dick’s 1994 debut, Different Story. Powered by its inclusion in the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack and a well placed penis joke, the first and most famous of these, “New Age Girl,” rose as high as #27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and ultimately clinched the group’s spot in the exclusive company of bands like Primitive Radio Gods, Spacehog, and 4 Non Blondes. As is often the case with one-hit wonders, the band’s follow up singles have plenty to offer—upbeat, hooky, 3-minute pop that, in a different world (or just a different movie), might well have experienced a blowup on par with the breakout hit. But such is life, I suppose. It seriously feels as though it’s been years since a Michigan game has prompted a celebratory beer. So yeah, hot iron striking, and all that—Hop Slam here I come….

  1. Oh my, these are actually some pretty good songs. I thought they’d be a one hit wonder to the max but apparently not. A solid buy.

    Also, Brian’s analysis of the dudes with the record painted on their chests is hilarious — http://mgoblog.com/content/zero-day-muppets. I wish I had a Hopslam…

  2. I heard about how you wouldn’t let Neil buy Ben a full case of slopslam. He’s listening to Pavement now. He deserves some ‘slam.

  3. John why do i get the feeling you are going to be the last, and may not even make an attempt, at the avatar thing? Also this is true, ben was playing pavement last weekend. The grunge must have been a little too heavy on him

  4. Hold up, I simply reminded my father of what the drinking environment is like at Ben’s establishment. Ben might be able to handle a case of the finest, most alcoholic beverage known to man but I don’t think his Natty-drinking roomies can. Just trying to maintain the integrity of the beer here.

    Someone needs to help John get an avatar. It should be a rock.

  5. Also, what’s the deal? Does Ben not read the Tracks? Everyone’s doing it.

  6. Could we come up with a fun name for people who follow the blog? I’m thinking the Track Faction or the Slay Ride or something like that.

  7. Im sad no one has asked about mine…. I kinda really thought it out…

  8. Ya, someone really needs to set up an avatar for me. I tried… but you know me. I like the idea of having a team name. I was thinking may Track Stars. Then again Slay Ride is pretty epic. And Matt, let’s be serious, Ben doesn’t know how to read.

  9. I was actually about to ask about yours David. Is that Doug with glasses drawn on him?

    Slayers.

  10. Doug with glasses drawn on him…..stargazing. Ant ideas yet?

  11. @Calth: I have no idea what you’re talking about. Is this some strange Doug Martsch / Harry Potter reference? Is Doug temporarily blind?

    @Merlin: I am 100% behind Team Slayer.

  12. He needs his special stargazing glasses to see certain dinosaurs laying on their sides up in the sky. Whatever, i think its cool. It was my first favorite BTS song so i found it was worthy.

  13. Aha, I gotcha, though I am surprise that a brontosaurus didn’t make it into the image as well.

  14. He never saw the brontosaurus, that is why he has the glasses….. duh. Also john has been avatared, little girl with giant mushrooms
