Thursday Throwback: “Molly (Sixteen Candles)”

Ah, Thursday—here again. For this week’s throwback, I’m going with something closer to home for me, Detroit’s own entry to the post-grunge explosion, Sponge, with their Billboard Hot 100 hit, “Molly (Sixteen Candles).” Sponge will always hold a special place in my heart, not so much for the music they produced throughout the mid-nineties (which was, for the most part, excellent), but because of the Fags, an offshoot of the band that became staples of the motor city indie scene during the early oughts and thus an infatuation of my sixteen-year-old self. But anyhoo, though essentially a STP rip, Sponge produced more than its share of genre classics, first among them “Molly,” that perfect blend of amped up jangle, collegiate angst, and throwback charm.
