Forklift: P4K’s “Top 100 Tracks of 2010″

Pitchfork’s “Top 100 Tracks of 2010” feature came to a grand finale today. New music connoisseur I am definitely not, so I typically enjoy browsing lists like this to see which breakout artists are dominating the inter-webs. I was consequently somewhat disappointed (though far from shocked) to find the list’s upper echelon occupied by a cast of usual suspects—Kanye, Big Boi, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, and Joanna Newsom. Granted, P4K reserved the top spot for an relative unknown, the verbosely named Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, but honestly that song didn’t really leave me feeling, how to say it, “sufficiently blown away.” I certainly wouldn’t have been able to come up 400 words of puff about it, and the glut of recent YouTube comments suggests I’m not the only one. Then again, nothing else in the top ten stood out to me either—I honestly can’t decide whether I find Kanye West’s music stupidly awful or just hilariously ridiculous. All that being said, a few entries lower on the list (particularly tracks by Best Coast and No Age) really piqued my interest. Mostly because they’re so reminiscent of other bands I already like—Pavement, Sonic Youth, etc.—but whatever.  So I guess thank you, Pitchfork.

  1. I listened to a bunch of the tracks on this list and I just can’t get inspired by any of them. I mean, I get why LCD Soundsystem or the Arcade Fire are liked, but I just can’t bring myself to waste time on them. There are just too many other bands out there that are far more interesting in my opinion.
