I’m man enough to admit it when I’m wrong, hence this series. Scott gave me Glee by Bran Van 3000 about 5 months ago and I didn’t even give them a chance until the other day. This was mainly because A) their name sucks — honestly “3000?”, “Bran Van”? WTF? — and B) apparently Ohio was far enough from Canada to not get indoctrinated by “Drinking in L.A.” when it came out so I have no childhood memories of the song. Anyway, I was wrong. They’ve got some good stuff. “Drinking in L.A.” is a classic 90’s alt track — go back and listen to it if you haven’t already. Their cover of “Cum On Feel The Noize” is solid, and “Exactly Like Me” is just great all around. I’m still not sold on some of their stuff — too much sampling going on on a few tracks for my liking — but I admit I was wrong. Bran Van 3000 is legit — they’re straight up solid pop music.
Scott, feel free to use this series as well to repent for all the times I told you so…
This means the world to me, Matt. BV3 was and is one of my favorites, though I fully admit nostalgia plays a major role in that opine. They kind of got swept up in the then-waning trip-hop craze and never took themselves all that seriously (I’m sure leading off with a track called “Gimme Sheldon” sounded clever to someone), but as you say, they did put out some solid, fun, catchy music — I’ll be more than satisfied if LT can say as much one day.
