Mattison Haired!

Michigan’s sideline coiffure took another big hit today with the announcement that Greg the Robinson was to be replaced by Greg the Mattison as defensive coordinator. While perhaps a smart hire from a football perspective, the coaching staff now lacks that one signature ’do around which the team (and fanbase) can rally. However, with the position of quarterbacks coach still vacant, rumors are swirling that headman Brady Hoke may bring in a big mane to give his staff a bit more epidermic diversity. The so-called “Bielema Rule” requires that Hoke interview at least one candidate with a douche-bag haircut before he can make his final selection, though, so the hiring process will likely continue into next week. In all seriousness, this is good news in a week so far sorely lacking in it. As such, here’s Mercury Rev with their blissed-out lilt, “Car Wash Hair.” Name their equal when it comes to beautifully nonsensical freeform pop, and I’ll owe you a coke.

  1. Sweet photoshop. I’m a fan so far of the Mattison pick up. I think the defense would have improved somewhat regardless given another year experience, but hopefully he can make them…good. Haven’t seen that in a while.

On a Slay Tracks related note, what are your thoughts on Neil Peart? My brother got me the Spirit of Radio greatest hits CD from Rush for Christmas for inspiration, as I am a drummer in a wildly successful rock band (Delusions of Grandeur aka Confidential Waste aka Grouper Sandwich). I’m digging it so far. I’d like to know your thoughts.

  2. I can certainly appreciate the amount of sound these guys pump out as well as their unparalleled proficiency, but I’ve never been a huge prog guy myself. Two minute pop is more to my wavelength. That being said, I highly recommend this band Van Der Graaf Generator and particularly their song “Killer.” It’s a nine minute epic about a killer fish and features such classic lyrics as “On a black day / In a black month / At the black bottom of the sea / Your mother gave birth to you / And died immediately!” Check it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpTkImmOtiE

In other news, came up with another sweet band name: Terrelle’s Priors

  3. The Mattison hire is definitely the best thing to come out of this whole debacle so far. GERG will be missed but not forgotten.

Andy, do the Groupers have any recorded material? We should put together a split EP with Grouper Sandwich and Laszlo Toth. We call dibs on a Crash Test Dummies cover.

  4. No recorded material yet. We were hoping to record soon, but apparently the lead singer/second guitar player is pregnant now. Completely whack. We were just about to make it big. We did have two live gigs though, we rocked the shit out of everyone.

Scott, that song is spectacular. Maybe I’ll suggest it four Grouper. Gets a little weird about 2/3rds of the way through with what I take to be fish sounds, but it comes back out strong.
