Every time I listen to Animal Collective or Panda Bear (a side project of AC), I can’t help but take a quick detour over to Rollerskate Skinny, a pretty minor early-90’s band that at one point or another may have included Kevin Shields’ brother… While AC probably does more in terms of song structure experimentation, the frenetic style of the compositions, the mashing of sounds, and the often repetitive nature of the melodies makes the Rollerskate Skinny sound like their grandfather or maybe great uncle or something.
