For about a year now, Scott and I have been trading tunes on a weekly basis via email as a way of keeping up with each other’s weekly listening habits. We’re talking one song a week, some brief rambling about how awesome we think it is, and then a completely unfounded comparison to the great Laszlo Toth. Nothing grand, just a general summation of our week in music. We’re going to try to move this weekly convo over to this here blog, but I can’t guarantee anything in terms of consistency.
Anyway, my counter to Scott’s SotW (“Proto-Pretty” by the Wondermints) is from the new live Mogwai album, Special Moves (or to be specific, from the accompanying bonus disc). It’s the antithesis to his breezy ‘Mints and completely kicks my ass at 4:27. If Laszlo Toth could ever get it together (a blessing and a curse), I imagine a set list alternating between fun 2-minute pop jangles and epically heavy noise affairs. That’s how we’d roll.
Also, Special Moves comes highly recommended. While Mogwai’s last few studio albums haven’t been all that consistent, this live album just shows they still gots it — clearly something is being lost in translation from the stage to the studio to the LP…
