So in addition to my ongoing music exchanges with Matt, I take part in a weekly swap with my friend and coworker Will. A member of the Schoolkids’ family during its heyday (and current Wazoo-ite), Willski is a record guru par excellence, certainly the likes of which Matt and I aspire to become. Anyhoo, this week Will brought in the Hoodoo Guru’s third album, 1987’s Blow Your Cool. A longtime fan of the Gurus (particularly their oft-compilated college rock hit, “I Want You Back”), I was not disappointed. The record’s standout is definitely the single “What’s My Scene” with its intoxicating blast of power pop chords, angsty lyrics about not knowing where and with whom you belong, and a window’s down chorus that once again proves backing vocals by the rest of the band were the secret weapon that should have made the Guru’s absolutely huge in the States (as they were in their homeland, Australia). In short, “What’s My Scene” is more or less what Laszlo Toth would sound like if we laid off our distortion and jangle-core proclivities in favor arena ready pop rock with a dash of Aussie charm. Also if we were able to write hooks that just didn’t quit.

Another quality track from Will. I’ll have to get some Gurus at some point. Should I look out for this album or the one with “I Want You Back”?
Their first three albums are all quality, but Stoneage Romeos (which features “I Want You Back”) is prob my fav. “Bittersweet” off their sophomore record, Mars Needs Guitars, is another choice cut.
