So I thought for this week’s Thursday Throwback I’d go with a bit of grade A Brit-pop from Liverpudlian electro-rockers Space. Powered by a Bond-esque video and endearingly left field lyrics about an occult lover, the band’s 1996 single “Female of the Species” climbed as high as #15 on the US Modern Rock charts and was later selected for inclusion in the soundtrack to Austin Powers (the first one), making it the closest the band had or would come to a stateside breakthrough. Given the band’s trademark goofiness, manifested here in the cheesy lounge singer vibe and heavy doses of synthesized marimba, it’s pretty easy to hear why. Fun fact: the song’s title and chorus are lifted from Rudyard Kipling’s 1911 pseudo-feminist poem of the same name. Anyhoo, stay tuned for Laszlo Toth’s next album, a rock opera take on Rikki-Tikki-Tavi…

Don’t remember this one, but it’s catchy. Very catchy.
