So I happened upon a copy of Garbage’s sophomore album, 1998’s Version 2.0, in the bargain bin this past week. The band’s debut had produced more than its share of radio hits, (“Only Happy When it Rains,” “Stupid Girl,” “Queer,” etc.), but I had completely forgotten all the prime Throwback material on Version 2.0. Powered by slightly shinier production than its predecessor but the same techno-inflected aesthetic, the record spawned three singles that cracked the Billboard Hot 100 in 1998 (“Push It” reaching #52, “I Think I’m Paranoid” #70, and “Special” #52), garnering the band massive radio play, multiple Grammy nominations, and later that year a go at the theme to the decade’s third entry to the James Bond franchise, “The World Is Not Enough.” Though constantly overshadowed by the Cobain’s and the Corgan’s and—even in his own band—the Manson’s (go figure), Butch Vig’s nineties track record (see what I did there?) is pretty much unparalleled. I mean this guy became alt rock’s premier producer by basically shitting gold records. Matt and I have a call in to see if he’d be interested in getting into the Laszlo Toth business. We’ll see how that goes…
